Appam is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish popular in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Some parts of India. Made from fermented batter of rice, appam makes for a soft and fluffy pancake that can be enjoyed with coconut milk, coconut chutney, vegetable stew or spicy curries.

 

Appam can be enjoyed in many different ways. It can be served plain, with a sprinkle of sugar, or with various accompaniments. Kerala typically serves appam with vegetable stew or chicken curry while Tamil Nadu prefers it with coconut chutney and sambar. Some people also like to dip their appam into spicy egg curry or fish curry for added flavor.

 

This sweet appam is very easy to make and I could not wait to share this recipe, for this festive season. It needs no soaking or grinding of rice to a smooth paste. As I have not added cooking soda or baking powder or banana, this appam will not be spongy. It will be a little crisp on the outside and soft on the inside but definitely will taste very delicious. It can be made during festivals or can be had as an anytime snack. You can also give this healthy snack to your kids after they get back from school.
